Dear Parents and Caregivers

The Development Office has been laying the foundations for the Capital Campaign which is required to raise funds to outfit Stage 1 of the Sports Centre and to extend this through the construction of Stage 2. We are delighted to announce that Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot and Thompson, has agreed to be the Chairperson of the Campaign.

Peter is well respected in the business world having been in the family business for 29 years and is Director of Realestate.co.nz web company. He has a wide involvement in sport being on the Auckland Rugby Board of Directors, President of College Rifles Rugby and Sports Club and a past manager of the Auckland Rugby Team.

We are thrilled that Peter has agreed to lead us in the challenges we have ahead and know that there will be many people who would like to work with him on this campaign. If you would like to learn more about the opportunities, please contact Brenda Perry, Director of Development on 970 6753 or email brendap@eggs.school.nz.

This year we have been piloting the use of netbooks in one Year 9 class and Fuji Xerox has recently sponsored the purchase of a second set which other classes can borrow. Next term we would like to provide the opportunity for all Year 9 students to bring to school an internet capable wireless learning device which they would like to use in the classroom. This does not mean that parents need to buy a device for their daughter but, if she already has a netbook or a laptop, she is welcome to bring it to class. It is important to note that we do not have facilities for students to charge their devices at school and that students will be responsible for the security of their own property.

Next term will provide an opportunity for students to experiment with devices, for the school to test our wireless network for wider use and for teachers to integrate ICT further into their lessons. We see the use of such devices as providing the opportunity for lessons to be more student-centred with students able to work on their own areas of need and interest. There will be a meeting for the parents of Year 9 students on 14 September to provide more information on this issue.
